Sir, - The Gloster Whittle €28/39 was not the first turbojet powered aircraft to fly successfully, as stated by Charles Arthur. This distinction belongs to the Heinkel HE178, with an engine designed by Dr Hans Pabst von Ohain, which was flown at Monenehe, Germany, on August 29th, 1939. The theory of jet propulsion was proposed by Captain Merconnet of France long before Whittle's papers.
