Sir, – The Government is looking for some sensible suggestions that would help generate extra revenue. I have a simple one.
Eliminate agricultural diesel, let registered legitimate users claim a rebate on duties and close down the entire diesel washing business. Not only would this ensure that the Government gets all the taxes it needs, but would eliminate an industry that has caused some dreadful environmental issues, and would also take a lot of profit away from various gangsters and subversives.
Why not go a step further? Eliminate road tax and tolls and replace them with a few cents on petrol and diesel at the pumps. The multiple civil servants freed up by this step would ensure that legitimate users of the current agricultural diesel scheme get a speedy rebate on duties paid.
It would also save those poor motorists who have spent a fortune repairing their cars as a result of unknowingly filling up with washed diesel somewhere in Ireland over the last few months. – Yours, etc,
