Aftermath of Iraq invasion

Madam, - The rape and pillage of Iraq continues

Madam, - The rape and pillage of Iraq continues. Now it's the Iraqi oilfields that have been illegally taken away from the people and given into the greasy fingers of the US giant oil company Halliburton (The Irish Times, May 8th).

The real objective of the US-led invasion of Iraq becomes clearer day by day: the consolidation of cheap oil resources for the US and the Western economies for the rest of this century.

In plain, unspun language this amounts to international robbery. However, unlike most robberies this is the very rich robbing from the very poor to further enrich themselves and their gold-circle friends.

Ordinary Irish people who backed the invasion of Iraq believing it was about the liberation of the Iraqi people must now feel betrayed. It is now time that all right-minded Irish people united to demand a new UN Security Council resolution demanding an end to this outrageous despoliation of Iraq. Would Bertie Ahern please join our ranks. - Yours, etc.,

Madam - As somebody who opposed George Bush's Iraqi invasion I find myself agreeing with Adrian Bourke's call (May 8th) for a boycott of American products. Of course, in fairness, all those in Ireland who have benefitted from American companies through investment, employment or trade should return such benefits. It is referred to as "putting your money where your mouth is". - Yours, etc.,
