AFTER CANARY WHARF

Sir, Nothing could be more abhorrent than the IRA decision to bomb Canary Wharf

Sir, Nothing could be more abhorrent than the IRA decision to bomb Canary Wharf. In addition, nothing could be more tactically naive. But it does not raise one's spirits to hear the British Government still urging, in the face of this setback, its idiotic election proposals proposals which were themselves instrumental in bringing about the attack. (Yes, Mr Editor, me again but bear with me a little)

It is instructive in this context to study an article by David Trimble, printed last Sunday, which expands on his support for elections. The article says, for instance "Sinn Fein might well receive a derisory vote. Have you not considered how well that might advance the process?" Yes, Mr Trimble, but have you not considered how you are trying to force an electoral template over a non democratic process?

Sinn Fein may well have some minor electoral mandate, but in no way is that great enough to justify their negotiations with the British government or their visits to President Clinton and the same applies to the fringe loyalist parties. Their mandate is their capacity to cause disruption, suffering and immense financial damage a thoroughly disreputable mandate, but one in no way to be disregarded. If that is, your goal is a permanent cessation of violence, and not a bogus half crown parliament. Yours, etc., Markethill BT60 ITX, Co Armagh.
