Sir, - It is right and proper that Marie Therese Farrell (January 25th), should have drawn attention to official attitudes to the adoption of Chinese orphans. However, this is all part of a policy when it comes to refugees.
It has constantly baffled me that middle ranking officers of the Department of Justice should have the power to exclude, jail and deport refugees.
We had the dreadful incident at Shannon Airport when Kurdish refugees were dragged and pulled back on a plane. We should recall the Cuban who ended with a 10 year jail sentence in Havana thanks to the zeal displayed at the airport. He was a victim of the policy not to upset Aeroflot.
Official policy towards refugees has been, and is appalling. We have had this deport them all rule for the best part of 65 years and, in true tradition, governments, of all hues, could not care less. However, active protest by the voters could change all that at some speed. - Yours, etc.,
