A Rose by any other number

Madam, – I enjoyed Rosita Boland’s articles, which conveyed well the atmosphere in Tralee. However, I must take issue with the headline (Home News, August 27th) “Kildare-born London Rose wears the 50th crown”. The charming Miss Kenny is the 51st Rose of Tralee. The 50th is last year’s winner, Aoife Kelly, from Tipperary.

The first Rose contest was in 1959 and it produced the first winner. In 1960, it was the first anniversary but the winner was the second Rose. I am aged 51 and am in my 52nd year.

I knew my training as a chartered accountant would come in useful some day. If the Nama bosses are recruiting, I hope they read this. – Yours, etc,
