Sir, - Is Dr McDaid, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, aware that a native wood is to be cleared to build houses in his own constituency by grant-aided developers? This is a rhetorical question. I know that he is. The real question is: what, if anything, is he going to do about it?
Burt Wood, Co Donegal, is among the very few native woods left on this island. It is also home to a bird which is very rare in this part of the world, namely the buzzard. The grant allocated to the developer (a heritage centre, if you don't mind) came from the International Fund for Ireland, or should that be the International Fund against Ireland?
Maybe we Irish should think twice before lecturing those "reckless" people in Brazil about the destruction of their rainforests.
Question: Should Bord Failte sponsor environmental vandalism or should the destroyers of woods have to rely on their own resources? Answers on a postcard please to your local TD. - Yours, etc.,
Breeda O Loghlin, Burt House, Speenogue, Co Donegal.
