Madam, - Walking down Henry Street in the face of a bitter wind on an overcast day I saw it for the first time. The lower part wrapped in black, the upper silvery cylinder still unfinished. I was not impressed.

Then the clouds parted and a shaft of light ran up the column, a veritable Jacob's Ladder pitched 'twixt heaven and O'Connell Street. It lifted my spirits.

I do not care what the begrudgers call it. To me they are the cynics described by Oscar Wilde as knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing. - Yours, etc.,
