Madam, – You report that English city councils are closing some of their public lavatories. They should visit Dublin and see how to do it in style. Fifty years ago a walk home from O’Connell Street brought me past the welcoming Fir/Mná sign seven times: by Fr Matthew’s statue, at the corner of Burgh Quay, by Thomas Moore’s statue, at Stephen’s Green,at the top of Harcourt Street, at Ranelagh Triangle, and at the crossroads in Rathmines. Every one of those oases has gone. Citizens must face barmen’s looks, brave MacDonalds, beg for door codes in cafes. It’s an inconvenience. If Fine Gael come to power will they stand up for the WC? – Yours, etc,
