A chara, – I took great exception to your Editorial (July 25th).
You clearly liked the comments from Michael McDowell a former Progressive Democrat leader and Tánaiste. The former Progressive TD lashes out at those who fail to pay their taxes and I concur completely on that subject.
You then go on to say that his criticism “will no doubt bring retaliation from a variety of quarters”. Yet nowhere in your editorial do you mention that when in the PDs, Mr Mc Dowell was foremost in his advocacy in bringing down the tax bands for the very wealthy he now seeks to portray as not giving loyalty to the State.
Such hypocrisy from your paper and Mr McDowell I cannot stand. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – In light of your Editorial (July 25th), permit me to ask an abrasive question of Michael McDowell, namely, what was he thinking when he paid €29.9 million for the site at Thornton Hall?
A truthful answer would surely “cut to the heart of democratic accountability”. – Yours, etc,
