A chara, – If Angela Merkel visits us next year during Ireland’s EU presidency, I am not sure that viewing a statue which commemorates how we helped German children after the second World War would be the wisest move (PN Corish, October 20th).
I think it would be much more beneficial to bring Dr Merkel on a Dublin Simon souprun to meet the homeless; to visit Brother Kevin while he gives out food parcels at the Capuchin Friary; perhaps she could stay overnight with an incapacitated person who cannot afford medicine and who has no home help; and she could finish her tour by meeting the families of those who saw suicide as their only solution.
Our Taoiseach and Tánaiste could accompany Dr Merkel on her tour – it would be good for them to connect with ordinary people.
Maybe, just maybe, the austerity troika of Merkel, Kenny and Gilmore might then wake up to the misery they are causing here. – Is mise,
