Sir, – The recent uncertainty that the Social Welfare Bill would make it through the Seanad highlights the role that the Upper House plays in the Republic.
While the passing of the Bill, containing aspects that are most unpopular, if not unjust, was guaranteed in the Dáil, its passage was not as assured among the Senators.
Although it looks as if the Government has ensured the passing of the Bill, this event has, once again, shown that the Seanad is often the site of genuine debate and decision, relatively free of the restrictive party whip system and showmanship of the Lower House. It is, therefore, curious that this is the House that Taoiseach Enda Kenny wishes to abolish in the name of political reform. – Is mise,
