Madam, – The recent decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions not to press charges for the leaking of confidential Garda material in the Trevor Sargent, TD, case seems to have been received without much, if any, media comment (Home News, October 7th).

Does this latest decision mean members of An Garda Síochána can now leak so-called confidential material, politically sensitive or otherwise, without fear of retribution from their superiors or political masters?

If so, as it now seems, the word “confidential” must join the sorry list of debased and abused words in our courts and tribunal system – words such as perjury, oath, honour, responsibility, morality and truth. – Yours, etc,
