Madam, – Jonathan Swift must be doing 78 rpm in his crypt (on the other side of the river?). He wrote his satires and pamphlets at a time when Ireland was under the economic cosh and at the whim of a worldwide recession.
Where are our wits, scribes and comedians? I have only heard one comedian take on the bankers and the developers and their crony politicians. That comedian was Andrew Maxwell and, well, he lives in England!
I fear that our well-known comedians have fallen silent on the recession, because they were one of the groups that became fat, suckling on the Celtic Tiger. As out of touch as a Catholic bishop and as smug as a Fianna Fáil minister stuffed with oysters and porter, in a Galway tent. Soon the tents will be up in Kilkenny for the Cat Laughs. Or should it be renamed, the Fat Cat’s Laugh? Jonathan Swift would know. - Yours, etc,
