Sir, – With the various political parties throwing promises about like snuff at a wake, I am reminded of a process which was popular up to the middle of the last century.
Engagements to marry were seen as a serious commitment, with the result that, if the man called off the engagement, the spurned lady could sue him for breach of promise. This made for some salacious reading in the mainly English newspapers, where names and addresses, including those who sued in the Dublin courts, were published.
When the next government is formed, could members of the public sue the political parties which fail to meet their promises? – Yours, etc,
