Children, social media and public health

Time for action

Sir, – The Tánaiste has expressed great concern about the impact of social media on the health of young people, citing it as a public health threat (News, April 13th). Why then is this Government not more proactive in monitoring and limiting the reach of some social media platforms? Many health professionals have given their views on the appropriate age for children to be allowed access such platforms. It would be great if this Government had acted on those recommendations rather than spending millions on phone pouches, which are of questionable benefit, and only effective for part of a young person’s day. – Yours, etc,

HELEN McCORMACK,

Dublin 3.
