Sir, – As a cyclist who has many times come within a hair’s breadth of being sent flying by a careless car driver opening their roadside car door in front of me, I would heartily endorse the left-handed “Dutch hold” for all door opening motorists, as suggested by John Gaffney (Letters, July 30th).
Unfortunately, that is unlikely to become a popular method for car drivers to exit their cars.
Instead, cyclists will continue to need to develop that almost X-ray vision and instinctive apprehension when approaching a parked car, known by the experienced as the Grip On Life. – Yours, etc,
