Sir, – Reading Conor Lally’s piece on the Dublin riots, the dominant theme throughout is a lack of accountability at multiple levels (”How far right-sparked violence dominated the year in policing during 2023″, Analysis, December 27th). For a growing city of Dublin’s size, surely recent events should act as a catalyst for the introduction of a directly elected mayor with real executive powers. When London introduced this model, mayors became explicitly involved in the development of crime reduction strategies, as well as direct engagement with local communities and stakeholders.
Dublin needs concentrated and determined leadership. – Yours, etc,
