Sir, – Kevin Nolan bemoans the fact that the Dublin Marathon “shuts down access to the city, and destroys one of our prized bank holiday weekends” (Letters, October 31st).
His complaint might have had more validity if he had drawn attention to the decision to withdraw all Dart services on the northside to the city centre for “maintenance works”.
As someone with more than a passing interest in how the marathon has rejuvenated the city on what was once a dreary holiday weekend, I would appeal to Mr Nolan to think again.
I live in Wicklow town and am in my 80s. I had no problem driving to Sandyford Luas and using my travel pass to get to Harcourt Street and walking 20 minutes to the marathon start line.

It was a marvellous day out in spite of the weather, with big crowds to cheer the runners on.
Afterwards, there were plenty of people soaking in the atmosphere and lots of pubs and cafes were open to welcome the weary runners. A great day out for many Dubliners and I look forward to the 43rd marathon next year. – Yours, etc,
