Sir, – It is refreshing to see the positive narrative surrounding the contribution of religious women emerging in your pages (Gillian O’Brien, “Overlooking nuns’ contribution to Ireland erases women from our history – yet again”, Rite & Reason, April 17th; Dianne Kirby, Letters, April 24th).
For too long they have all been tarnished because of the unacceptable behaviour of some who, as in any walk of life, were obviously totally unsuitable for the path they choose.
Religious women dedicated their lives to education, health care and social care in this country.
For many of us who were in school in the 1970s, these women gave us the tools to think outside the box and develop a social conscience.– Yours, etc,
