Sir, - Leaving Cert students of 2001 will know that the "text" prescribed in the new English syllabus is the film Dances with Wolves by Kevin Costner, not the novel by Michael Blake, as Eddie Robinson (June 20th), seems to imply.
Confusingly, those who take this film studies option can write on Mr Costner's work as one element in a meaninglessly generalised comparative question, along with, for example, King Lear.
I persist in questioning the wisdom of this. - Yours, etc.,
Michael McCarthy, Teacher of English, Monkstown CBC, Templeogue, Dublin 16.
