The spirit of General Practice dimmed in the Limerick area on Friday February 28th as news, of John's death the previous evening in the US reached the city. Considered by his colleagues as, the quintessential general practitioner, he brought to his work the traditional caring qualities of compassion, support and understanding. He identified with his patients' problems, both medical and personal, and was unsparing in his efforts to alleviate them. He was especially a good friend to the socially deprived who sought his help and advice.
This same concern was shown to his friends and colleagues on many occasions. Their appreciation was evident as they walked in silent procession through the dark streets of Limerick, forming, a guard of honour as his remains were brought to the church.
Well known in many parts of the country, John's school days in Roscommon and in Blackrock College, and his medical studies in UCG, were followed by happy years in general practice in Donegal and finally in Limerick city where he spent most of the last 20 years of his life.
While his main interest was always his work, John was also a keen golfer and was a former captain of Murvagh Golf Club in Donegal. Sadly, his death occurred during a golfing trip to the US.
On golfing trips and on many other social occasions, his impish smile and wry sense of humour will be sorely missed. But, he will be missed much more for his quiet integrity. He was indeed a man of honour and courage.
While John's loss is keenly felt by so many whose lives he touched, our sympathy goes especially to his brothers, Liam, Seamus and Dermot, his sisters, Mary and Rita, and especially to his beloved wife, Sal and his dear daughters Sorcha, Aoife and Joanna.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
