DR Ian James Dalrymple, FRCOG, FRCPSI, left this life on September 26th, 1996 following a relatively short illness. Born in 1930, he was the son of Dr James Dalrymple who hailed from Antrim, but practised medicine in Leeds. Ian continued the family tradition in medicine and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1954.

He interned at Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital, Dr Steevens's Hospital and the Rotunda Hospital. He developed his career further in Northern Ireland and London before returning to the Rotunda as assistant master, and later consultant. In 1974 Ian became Master of the Rotunda Hospital, a post he held for the seven year term. Following his mastership, he carried on his working duties in obstetrics and gynaecology until his retirement in June 1995.

During his years at the Rotunda Ian made many friends among students, junior hospital medical staff, post graduate students and fellow consultants. Most of all, he was respected and loved by the nursing staff, secretarial staff and all other employees, many of whom will remember him, not only for his professional help and advice, but his willingness to help and understand in matters outside his professional duties. He had a great devotion to the hospital and patients and not only excelled in obstetrics and gynaecology, but also in his teaching ability and administrative capability.

"The Dally", as he was fondly known, will not only be missed by his family, but also by his dear friend Margaret and all at the Rotunda Hospital, together with a large circle of friends.
