Brazilian Ricardo Zonta will race for Jordan in tomorrow's Canadian Formula One Grand Prix after German Heinz-Harald Frentzen withdrew feeling unwell.
The race will be test driver Zonta's 30th grand prix start after two seasons with British American Racing and three points scored in total.
Jordan said in a statement that Frentzen was returning home to Monaco later today for tests after he complained of dizziness and headaches following a crash yesterday.
The team said race stewards had granted permission for Zonta, the official reserve, to race. The Brazilian was immediately out on the track for the day's first free practice.
Frentzen's Montreal accident came only two weeks after the German suffered another heavy crash in Monaco.
"I'm disappointed not to be driving in the race this weekend but wish the team and Ricardo all the best and look forward to being back in the driving seat at Nuerburgring," said Frentzen.
The European grand prix, the ninth of the 17-race season, is at the German track in two weeks' time.
Jordan said it had not yet been decided whether Frentzen would be able to participate in tests at Silverstone in England next week.
Zonta said he sympathised with Frentzen.
"I am sure it is a big disappointment for Heinz that he will not race. I really hope to do a good job for him and for the Jordan team.
"In many ways, this is tougher than competing in your debut grand prix but I must say I am excited about getting into the car to race again."
Frentzen's accident, right at the end of the second free practice session on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit yesterday, occurred at the same place where he had a crash in 1999.
"Somebody put dirt on the track," he said afterwards. "I lost the rear of my Jordan and hit the barrier really hard." -Reuters
