MEDICAL AND psychological assistance is to be provided to a teenager charged in connection with stabbing Garda Daryl Mullen in Co Mayo on Sunday morning.

The 16-year-old youth appeared before Mullingar District Court yesterday charged with section 3 assault causing harm at James Street, Westport, on August 9th.

Sgt Patrick Lavelle said the teenager had replied “no” when charged with the offence. He applied to remand the youth in custody to appear before Castlebar District Court tomorrow.

Solicitor James Hanley said he had no objection to a remand, but expressed certain concerns for his client. He asked “that he receive immediate medical attention and also psychological attention”.
