A youth was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after he was cut free from a stolen car that crashed in Lucan, Co Dublin, late last night.

A Garda spokesman said that the BMW crashed into a pole near the Deadman's Inn and one of the occupants, believed to be the driver, was trapped in the wreckage. He had to be removed by members of Dublin Fire Brigade and was taken to St James's Hospital.

Another occupant was detained by gardai. A spokesman said the stolen vehicle had earlier attempted to ram a patrol car in the Ballyfermot area.
