A youth has been charged with assaulting a father of two during a St Stephen’s night fracas in which the man sustained fatal injuries.
Kief Varian (19), Sycamore Place, Togher, was brought before Cork District Court yesterday charged with assault causing harm to Gerard Delaney (51) at the Manhattan Bar, Lower Friar’s Street, Cork, early on December 27th, 2011.
Mr Varian was also charged with producing a timber bat and with affray.
Garda Insp Billy Duane said that gardaí had no objection to bail once certain conditions were met.
Judge Leo Malone remanded Mr Varian on bail to appear again on January 21st.
Mr Varian is the third person to be charged in connection with the fracas which saw Mr Delaney receive serious injuries which led to his death at Cork University Hospital.
Last Friday, Mr Delaney’s brother Finbarr (48), Plunkett Road, Ballyphehane, was charged with violent disorder at the Manhattan Bar on the same date.
Keith Spillane, Ashbrook Heights, Lehanaghmore, was charged with violent disorder and production of a pick-axe handle on the same date.
Judge James O’Connor remanded both men on their own bonds of €1,000 to appear again at Cork District Court on January 23rd, for service of the book of evidence.
