RECENT security lapses at Trinity House centre for young offenders in Dublin are to be given priority by a newly appointed board of management.
The security lapses include:
. A boy who admitted being part of a group who laughed as a woman was gang raped was taken on a "mobility trip" to the cinema only days after his conviction last July and absconded.
. A Dublin teenager, described by gardai as a "dangerous criminal for his age" escaped on Tuesday.
Trinity House, Oberstown Boys' Centre and Oberstown Girls' Centre share a campus. Their three boards of management are to be replaced by a single board, the Minister of State for Education, Mr Austin Currie, announced.
A new board of management has also been appointed for Finglas Children's Centre, which includes St Michael's Remand and Assessment Centre and St Laurence's Industrial School. The new chairman is Mr David Ruddy, a barrister and teacher. The Finglas centre was run by the De La Salle order until 1995.
