The Workers’ Party is to field a new candidate, Malachy Steenson, in the forthcoming Dublin Central by-election on June 5th.
Mr Steenson will “give workers the kind of voice in the Dáil that Tomás MacGiolla gave them in the past,” according to the party’s president Michael Finnegan.
Mr Steenson is calling for an end to tax exile status, an immediate programme of house building to clear waiting lists for social housing and a job creation policy based on the country’s natural resources.
“Dublin Central is one of the most disadvantaged areas in the country. Children from this area are no more likely to go to college than they were in the past despite years of prosperity,” said Mr Steenson.
“People in this area now have an opportunity to get their voices heard in the Dáil.”
The by-election is required to fill a seat in the Dublin Central constituency following the death of independent TD Tony Gregory in January.
