A man who claimed he was assaulted by Hollywood actor Woody Harrelson in a Dublin night club has settled his High Court action over the alleged incident.

Eamonn Cullen claimed the actor assaulted him with a snooker cue at Renards nightclub, trading as Engelson Ltd, in September 2001 as a result of which he allegedly suffered a split lip requiring 12 stitches and a damaged tooth.

A factory manager with an address in Artane, Dublin, Mr Cullen initiated an action claiming damages for personal injury, assault and battery, loss, and expense as a result of the alleged incident.

Mr Cullen’s proceedings were initially brought in 2004 against Engleson Ltd, with registered offices at South Frederick Street, Dublin.

Mr Harrelson, who starred in the Oliver Stone film “Natural Born Killers” and was the bartender Woody in the TV sit-com “Cheers”, was later joined as a co-defendant.

Both defendants denied Mr Cullen’s claims.

The action had been specially fixed for hearing today and was scheduled to take two days.

Mr Harrelson’s lawyers had also brought an application seeking to have the case against him dismissed on grounds of inordinate delay and want of prosecution.

It was claimed Mr Cullen failed to prosecute his claim within a reasonable time and Mr Harrelson was entitled to an order under the European Convention on Human Rights dismissing the claim against him. Mr Cullen’s lawyers opposed that application.

Last month, following talks between lawyers for both sides, the court was told the entire matter might not trouble the court and it could be mentioned again today when it was scheduled for hearing.

Yesterday, David Nolan SC, for Mr Cullen, told Ms Justice Mary Irvine the case had been settled and could be struck out with no order, with any previous orders also set aside.
