Tiger Woods made his first move of the Open Championship final round with successive birdies at the fourth and fifth holes to move within a shot of leaders Thomas Bjorn, Vijay Singh and Ben Curtis.

The world number one picked up his first shot at the par-five fourth and then sank a 16-foot birdie putt on the fifth green to get to one under par for the tournament.

Woods had started his round conservatively by taking an iron on the first tee to avoid the problems he suffered with his first shot of the tournament on Thursday.

He found the middle of the fairway to ensure no repeat of the lost ball and triple-bogey seven that got his bid for a second Open title off to such a poor start.

Woods, wearing his trademark final-round maroon shirt, safely found the green with his second shot and made par.

The American also had to settle for par at the second hole after narrowly missing a 12-foot birdie putt and he completed another routine par at the third.

Woods has never come from behind in the final round to win a major championship, having led the field after three rounds on the way to his British Open victory at St Andrews three years ago, his two U.S. Opens, three US Masters titles and two US PGA championships.
