DIY retailer Woodie's has today announced it is to create 200 jobs with the opening of four new stores in Cavan, Carlow, Clonmel and Limerick.

The expansion will cost €l7 million and increase Woodie's network of stores to 18 nationwide.

Announcing the new jobs today, Mr Ray Colman, chief executive, said the new store opening are part of the company's strategy to grow market share by opening stores in key regional locations. Mr Colman said Woodie's intended to have over 20 stores within the next two years.

Mr Colman said that despite concerns about consumer sentiment, the DIY market remains strong. Sales in the DIY/hardware sector in Ireland are worth an estimated €l,435 million per annum and Woodie's is the largest player in this market.

"With almost fifty per cent of the market controlled by independents, there is a lot scope for further consolidation in the sector and Woodie's is well positioned for further growth." Mr Colman said.

Woodie's has also recently acquired a premium three-and-a-half acre site on the Naas Road to develop another Dublin outlet. Subject to planning permission, the Naas Road outlet will become the largest store in the Woodie's network.
