THE Irish Bridge Union's Women's team for the European championships in Montecatini, Italy, next June, will comprise A. & R. O'Keeffe, A. Montwill, V. Hand and two new caps, P. Meehan and P. O'Neill.
After two weekends of trials at Elm Park Golf Club, Dublin, the top places were: 1, O'Keeffes 451; 2, Moritwill/Hand 423.5; 3, Meehan/O'Neill 421; 4, P. MacMahon, P. Ryan 414; 5, G. Finegan/B. Lynch 409.5; 6, T. Rigney/H. Dowling Long 405. The latter three pairs will be in the squad from which will be picked the teams to play in the home internationals.
The leading places in the open series after the second weekend were: 1, T. Hanlon, Dr H. McGann, 223; 2, Dr G.M. Keaveney, R Timlin 220; 3, I. Lindsay A.T.R. Anderson 217; 4, T. Roche, P. O'Briain 201; 5, J. Ferguson, I. Hamilton 200; 6, D. Garvey, M. O'Briain 198; 7, J. Comyn, B.J. O'Brien 195; 8, (tie) Commandant E.J. Fitzgerald with M. MacDonagh and J. Carroll with T. Garvey 194 each.
Hanlon and McGann, having finished first at that stage, will be on the team in Italy. After further trials next weekend at the Regent, Waterloo Road, Dublin, one of the following teams of four will join them - Keaveney/Timlin with Roche/O'Briain; Lindsa Anderson with Fitzgerald/MacDonagh; Ferguson/Hamilton with Comyn/O'Brien; Garvey/ O'Briain with Carroll/Garvey.
