Nairobi - A wedding in a western Kenyan town turned violent at the weekend when two brides, complete with aides, friends and relatives, turned up to find themselves competing for a single groom.
Mr Peter Amalembiye was all set to wed Ms Lilian Anyango at the Shibale Church of God in Mumias town, but an old girlfriend had other ideas, the East African Standard newspaper reported yesterday.
As the pastor announced he would marry Peter and Lillian, loud objections were raised from the entourage of Peter's former girlfriend, Ms Esther Atieno. "Either Amalembiye marries Atieno or there will be no wedding at the church," one man declared. Mr Amalembiye expressed his feelings by smashing a chair on the man's head. Guests then scurried for safety as a major fight broke out, only to be quelled by local police.
