Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin announced the winners of the inaugural Science Foundation Ireland/Dell - Young Women in Engineering Scholarships at a ceremony in Dublin today.
Ten winners received their prizes with an overall value of approximately €20,000.
The award consists of an annual award of €2,000; a Dell computer, the assistance and support of a research active mentor throughout their undergraduate career and the opportunity to spend summers in a research internship in university or industry.
Mr Martin said "These awards are aimed at attracting and encouraging more high-achieving young women into third-level education in engineering disciplines.
"There is a clear and unequivocal case for increasing the participation of women in science, engineering and technology in Ireland."
The winners are: Yvonne Murphy, studying Civil & environmental engineering at UCC; Claire Morrison, studying engineering at UCD;
Christine Power, studying civil & environmental Engineering at UCC; Helen Guinane, studying civil & environmental engineering at UCC; Laura Bree, studying biomedical engineering at NUI Galway; Eimear Dolan, studying engineering at NUI Galway; Tara Reale ,studying civil & environmental engineering at UCC; Una Hally, studying medical mechanical engineering at DCU; Karen McMorrow, studying engineering at TCD; and Niamh O'Connell, studying engineering at UCD.
