A WOMAN is being treated in hospital for severe burns following a fire at a house in Dublin city yesterday.
The fire broke out at a flat in a house in Chelmsford Road, Ranelagh, at about 4pm. It caused substantial damage to the upstairs of the building in which the blaze started.
Damage was also caused to the house next door.
The fire was thought to have been caused by an explosion that took place in the kitchen of the home, which is part of a terrace of two-storey units just off the Ranelagh Road.
It is thought that it may have been caused by a gas leak, although this was not officially confirmed last night.
The woman was taken to St Vincent’s University Hospital where her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
A second person in the house was also admitted to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and received treatment.
A Garda spokesman said it was believed the fire was caused by an explosion in the kitchen, although no further details emerged.
The incident caused residents in neighbouring houses to be evacuated and it also forced the closure of Chelmsford Road for a number of hours while the incident was dealt with by fire crews. The road reopened again shortly after 7pm.
