A woman who claimed she was let go from her employment because she had become pregnant settled her case after proceedings in the Circuit Court in Dublin yesterday. The case was heard by Judge Liam Devally.

A company director had told the court he had given another woman carte blanche in deciding how to handle the dismissal of his customer relations manager, Ms Mary Brien.

Mr Jim Donnelly, managing director of a safety appliance manufacturer, Schmidt Industrial (International) Ltd, of Ballyfermot, Dublin, had mounted a Circuit Court challenge to an £18,000 Employment Appeals Tribunal award to Ms Brien for unfair dismissal, but shortly afterwards settled the action.

Ms Brien, of Palmerstown, Dublin, claimed she had been let go because she had become pregnant.

She said Mr Donnelly's attitude changed completely towards her from the day she told him she was pregnant and he abused her and screamed at her. Mr Donnelly had claimed she was dismissed for failing to carry out her duties properly.

During cross-examination by Mr Stewart, he said he had given carte blanche to Ms Deirdre Cooney, a company consultant, to handle Ms Brien's dismissal.

Following the lunchtime recess, Mr Donnelly's counsel, Mr Alex White, said the parties had amicably resolved their differences.
