A woman (62) was rescued from Slemish mountain in Co Antrim today after suffering a suspected broken leg.

The North West Mountain Rescue Team were called to help the woman at around 12.30pm.

The rescue team, which had been on a training exercise in the area, managed to evacuate her from the mountain to a waiting ambulance within half an hour with the aid of members of the St John Ambulance.

“Although this lady was well equipped for the hills, accidents can, and do, happen,” rescue team leader Joe Dowdall said. “This is a classic example of bad luck, and should serve as a reminder to all to treat any mountain with a degree of caution.”
