A woman has gone on trial at the Central Criminal Court, charged with murdering her husband at their Westmeath home 23 years ago.

Vera McGrath has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Brian McGrath, who was aged 43, at Lower Coole, Coole, Co Westmeath on a date unknown between March 10th and March 18th, 1987.

Colin Pinder (46), of Lorne Street, Liverpool, England, was charged with the same offence in February 2009. He has also pleaded not guilty.

A jury of four women and eight men has been sworn in to try the case. The trial will begin on Friday and is expected to last three weeks.

Mr McGrath disappeared in early 1987. Bones believed to be his were found six years later buried on land close to his home but were not identified until May of last year with the aid of modern forensic science methods.
