A woman charged with the murder of her boyfriend at their home in Galway city last year has appeared before Galway District Court.

Ms Kathleen Bell (35), of Camilaun Park, Newcastle, was charged yesterday with the murder of Mr Patrick Sammon at their home on the night of June 19th-20th. Mr Sammon (41) died in hospital after being stabbed up to a dozen times with a kitchen knife following a violent row in the house.

Sgt Pat Collins gave evidence of arresting Ms Bell at her home. Af ter being charged and cautioned, she had replied: "It should never have happened, I am so sorry."

Defending solicitor Mr Sean O`Carroll told the court he would be applying for bail. Applying for free legal aid, Ms Bell said she got £72 a week disability benefit. Judge John Garavan granted the application and said her medical circumstances should be investigated. He remanded her in custody until February 23rd.

Mr Sammon, from Newport, Co Mayo, suffered multiple fatal wounds to the upper part of his body and was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to University College Hospital in Galway early on June 20th.
