A French woman is suing the medical authorities after learning that her chronic stomach pains were caused by a cotton pad left behind in an operation 24 years ago.
"Every time I complained they said it was psychosomatic. They never even tried to believe me," said Annick Sibille, 49, who underwent a first operation on an artery in 1977.
Last month she was operated on again after a doctor diagnosed an aneurism in a blood-vessel near her spleen, and it was then that the compress was discovered.
"In the end it was all because of the compress. There was no aneurism. My life has been poisoned for 24 years," Sibille said.
