A mother of three was killed on a busy dual-carriageway on the outskirts of Galway city yesterday morning when, it appears, she stopped her car to tend to her baby. Gardai have appealed for witnesses.
The dead woman has been named as Mrs Mary Clarke (37) of Tudor Vale, Oranmore, Co Galway.
She was travelling in a Renault 19 along the link road between the Tuam and Headford roads at around 9.45 a.m.
It is believed that she stopped to look after her distressed eight-month-old baby, who was in the back seat.
As she was standing on the right-hand side of her car she was struck by a van travelling in the same direction.
The van mounted the kerb, hit a lamppost and overturned. The driver was taken to University College Hospital and was described as "comfortable".
The woman was also taken to the hospital, but it is believed she was killed instantly.
Her baby was uninjured, but was taken to the hospital for observation.
Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact them at Mill Street Station on 091-563161.
