A 28 year old English policeman is due to appear in court today charged in connection with the death of a young woman whose family is from Wexford.
PC Peter Wallace, a constable attached to the Sussex Police, will appear before Tower Bridge Magistrates Court charged with careless driving, causing the death of Ms Mary Wood while under the influence of alcohol.
Ms Wood, a 28 year old mother of three, whose mother is from Wexford town, was killed in an accident at Peckham Hill Street, London, on Monday, July 15th.
She was sitting on a wall eating a bag of chips when a car driven by the off duty policeman hit her. She died instantly.
Ms Wood was born in London but lived in Wexford for most of her childhood. Her family returned to London some years ago. Her mother, Ms Una Wood, said the family was "devastated" by the tragedy.
The burial will take place tomorrow following Requiem Mass in the Uriary Church in Peckham.
