Gardaí have begun an investigation after a woman was killed when she was struck by a bus while crossing the street near the bus station at Parnell Place in Cork city centre yesterday evening.

The woman was named last night as Mona Bennett from Marian Park in Blackrock in Cork city and was in her mid-60s. She was fatally injured as she crossed Parnell Place from Merchant’s Quay just before 5pm. The single-decker bus was the 3.50pm service from Fermoy in north Cork and carried between 20 and 30 passengers. Gardaí and a HSE South ambulance were called but the woman was pronounced dead.

Gardaí have asked anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them at Anglesea Street Garda station on 021-4522000.
