A WOMAN was arrested last night in Limerick in connection with the murder of Det Garda Jerry McCabe at Adare on woman, who is from Co Limerick, was arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and is being held at Henry Street Garda Station in Limerick. She can be held for 48 hours.
Earlier the search for members of the IRA gang which shot dead Det Garda McCabe had been intensified after gardai received new information pointing to the men responsible.
It is understood there were seven men in the gang which set out to steal the cash delivery at Adare.
Four men were in the Mitsubishi Pajero which rammed the Garda car. Two of them fired the shots which killed Det Garda McCabe and injured his colleague, Det Garda Ben O'Sullivan. The three other men were involved in moving weapons and aiding the gang's escape.
It is understood gardai are now looking for a man from the Shannon area and another from the Cork Limerick area. Both are well known IRA members in Munster.
One man comes from a family with long standing republican connections and the other is originally from Dublin but has been living in Munster for more than a decade.
Gardai said yesterday they were not now searching for a Northern Ireland man associated with the Munster IRA, as reported earlier.
Armed gardai, supported by the Army, have increased their searches of suspected IRA "safe houses" and the Munster countryside for the two men. The operation is one of the largest in recent times and there is concern that there could yet be an armed confrontation with the wanted gunmen.
The Garda search is spread across north Cork, north Kerry, as well as Limerick, Clare and Tipperary. It involves armed detectives from the local divisions supported by officers from the Emergency Response Unit, who are specially trained in arms.
The Garda is not commenting on the numbers of officers involved but confirmed yesterday up. "Considerable" resources had been dedicated to the operation.
The Army has provided support in a specialist search company of 120 soldiers. It is understood to be searching for IRA arms dumps in north Kerry.
