According to gardaí, the victim was fatally injured after her car went out of control shortly after 9am on the M1 Northbound at Gormanstown and hit a lamppost.

The driver was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where she was pronounced dead.

There were six other deaths on the State's roads over the weekend.

A motorcyclist (31) died in a crash in Co Tipperary on Sunday night. The man was killed when his motorbike left the road at Powerstown, Clonmel at around 10.40pm.

His body was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital for a postmortem examination today. There were no other vehicles involved.

Two women remain in hospital this afternoon after being struck by a car at a church car park in Tramore, Co Waterford, on Saturday night. Their condition is described as stable.

Another woman was killed in the incident and has been named locally as Margaret Kelly (70) from Roselawn in Tramore. A fourth woman was discharged from hospital yesterday.

Elsewhere, a four-year-old boy remains in a critical condition this afternoon in Cork University Hospital after being knocked down by a coal lorry in Cork.

He was playing with a skateboard at Ardcullen in Knocknaheeny at lunchtime on Friday when he was knocked down by the delivery lorry. The incident is being treated as an accident.

Prayers were offered at Masses on the north side of Cork city yesterday for the boy and his parents. The boy was set to enrol in junior infants this morning at a primary school in Knocknaheeny, Cork city.

Gardaí have named the man who died when his motorbike collided with a tractor at Listowel, Co Kerry, yesterday morning as James Griffin (28) of Lixnaw, Tralee.

The deaths this weekend bring the number of people killed on the State's roads since the beginning of the year to 197 - about a 10 per cent reduction on the similar period last year.
