An anti-abortion campaigner arrested after a protest outside Dublin's Adelaide hospital appeared in court yesterday accused of assaulting a garda with a placard.

Ms Maria Caulfield (25) of Brookwood Park, Killester, Dublin, appeared in Dublin District Court charged with obstructing and assaulting Garda William O'Dwyer, breach of the peace and possessing a placard as an offensive weapon last Saturday. Garda Christopher Burdock said the defendant was injured during the incident outside the Adelaide Hospital around 3 p.m. and taken to the Meath Hospital before being charged at 5.55 p.m.

The defendant's mother told the court that she would be seeking all prosecution statements and identity of gardai involved and added that her daughter would be pleading not guilty. Judge Desmond Hogan remanded the defendant on bail to appear again on June 29th.
