A WOMAN has been arrested in connection with the murder of a man who was stabbed to death in what gardaí believe was a domestic incident. The woman was brought to hospital shortly after her arrest.
Gardaí in Carlow were alerted to the stabbing at 2am yesterday in an apartment at Barrow Mills, Graiguecullen, Carlow.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man and woman in the apartment. The man had suffered stab wounds and was taken by ambulance to St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny. His condition deteriorated and he was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after arriving there.
The 40-year-old woman found at the scene was arrested and initially taken for questioning to Carlow Garda station. However, shortly after her arrest she too was taken to hospital for treatment.
The woman, who is a member of the Travelling community, was still receiving medical attention last night. Gardaí said she was in a distressed and agitated state.
It was unclear last night when she will be well enough to be interviewed by gardaí.
The dead man has been named as Anthony O’Riordan (37). He was originally from Coolock, north Dublin, and had been living for some time at the apartment where he was found stabbed. The Irish Times understands he was not known to gardaí.
The arrested woman was known to the dead man. Gardaí investigating the killing are not seeking any other suspects at this time. They are treating the killing as a domestic incident.
It is understood Mr O’Riordan and the arrested woman had consumed alcohol before the fatal stabbing took place.
The man and woman are believed to have been in the company of a number of people known to them on Thursday night before they went back to the apartment where the stabbing took place.
A forensic examination of the apartment was carried out yesterday by members of the Garda Technical Bureau. It is believed the murder weapon was found in the apartment.
A postmortem on Mr O’Riordan was due to be completed in Kilkenny last night by State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy.
Garda sources said initial indications were that Mr O’Riordan had been stabbed several times in the upper body.
Gardaí are seeking the public’s help in assisting their investigation into the killing. Detectives would like to speak to anybody who was in the area around the Barrow Mills apartment complex about the time of the killing just before 2am yesterday.
