LONDON - A 54 year old woman has given birth to test tube twins, becoming the oldest woman in Britain to have children by in vitro fertilisation (IVF), sources at London's University College Hospital said yesterday.
The sources, quoted by the London Evening Standard, said the twins were born on Tuesday to the wife of a London School of Economics professor after treatment at a private fertility clinic.
The University College Hospital has an age limit of 48 for patients in its own fertility clinic, but said it was happy to handle the woman's delivery in its high risk obstetrics unit after she was referred by her family doctor.
