A WOMAN was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the N25 near New Ross in Co Wexford on Wednesday evening.
The woman killed in the crash was named locally as Lena Doyle (22) from Adamstown, Co Wexford. Ms Doyle was the front-seat passenger in the car that was involved in the crash at Begerin, Cushinstown, three miles from New Ross on the N25 to Wexford road at about 8.30pm.
A local source said that the car, came off the road at a bend and careered through a fence before coming to a halt in a field.
Four others were also injured in the incident: the female driver and three male passengers were taken to Waterford Regional Hospital and Wexford General Hospital.
Gardaí later described their injuries as not life-threatening.
A Garda forensic team attended the scene on Wednesday, while a section of the road was closed up to lunchtime yesterday.
In Limerick city, a 57-year-old woman was critically ill last night following a freak incident.
The injured woman had been walking in the O’Connell Avenue area shortly after 10.30am when a large branch struck her.
A truck, unbeknownst to the driver, knocked the branch from the tree on to the footpath as it was being driven past.
A passing nurse stopped her car and offered assistance at the scene, before the woman was taken by ambulance to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle.
It is understood she is a retired school teacher who lives in the locality.
A spokeswoman for the Health Service Executive described her condition as critical and said she was being cared for last night in the intensive care unit of the hospital.
Gardaí have spoken to the driver of the truck and interviews were ongoing yesterday, according to a Garda spokesman.
The scene of the incident was sealed off for a period to allow officers from the forensics unit to carry out an investigation.
The road was later reopened and gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to contact Roxboro Garda station on 061-214340.
